NFL commissioner Roger Goodell screwed up the league’s response to domestic violence punishments a few years ago, and it looks like he’s screwing up the league’s response to the ongoing player protests during the national anthem. Goodell has tried to stay neutral as President Trump criticizes NFL players, which started when he said anyone who kneels or sits during the national anthem is a “son of a bitch.” Last week, the commissioner released a memo to all 32 teams saying “everyone should stand” during the anthem. However, when pressed on the matter after the NFL’s fall meetings on Wednesday, Goodell said he wasn’t going to force any players to do so. He added the NFL is “trying to stay out of politics,” but that he hoped to eventually get the number of players kneeling or sitting down to zero. Even the owners—many of whom vocally or financially supported Donald Trump for president—are peeved with Goodell’s tepidness on the issue. According to ESPN, Goodell was expected to get a contract extension, but that’s been put on hold by his bosses until there’s a resolution with the anthem. Over the last 14 days, “Roger Goodell + Anthem” has a 30 percent positive score on Social.—Alex Shultz
