ESPN host Jemele Hill won’t be in the office for the next two weeks after she was suspended for what the sports network considered inappropriate tweets. In September, Hill referred to President Trump as a “white supremacist,” leading to criticism from conservatives, though ESPN ultimately didn’t punish her. More recently, she suggested that Dallas Cowboys fans upset at owner Jerry Jones, who has threatened to bench players kneeling during the national anthem, could retaliate by boycotting advertisers that financially support the team. Apparently, that violated ESPN’s tough-to-follow social media guidelines and triggered the suspension. Hill has since mostly kept quiet, though she did shout out her SportsCenter co-host Michael Smith in a tweet after he declined to work their show on the first day of Hill’s suspension, causing ESPN to find a fill-in. (Smith has since returned and is anchoring solo.) Hill wrote, “I love you @Michaelsmith for being my biggest supporter, a great friend, terrific husband & father. I truly don’t deserve you. See you soon.” Unsurprisingly, President Trump didn’t stay quiet, saying, “With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have ‘tanked,’ in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!” Over the last seven days, Hill’s handle (@JemeleHill) has a 47 percent positive score. --Alex Shultz Editor's Note: References to Hill's suspension and called boycott were removed from analysis to focus results on Jemele Hill.
