The U.S. government shutdown is officially kaput, at least until Feb. 8, but the blame game for why it happened in the first place has produced a bipartisan culprit: Stephen Miller. A senior advisor to President Trump, former Steve Bannon ally and aide to Jeff Sessions when he was a Republican senator from Alabama, Miller is an influential voice in the White House, especially on immigration issues. And on that front, he’s vehemently anti-immigration, which has led many in Congress to believe he was behind the sabotaging of potential deals Democrats and Republicans have discussed. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) put it succinctly on Sunday, telling reporters: “As long as Stephen Miller is in charge of negotiating immigration, we are going nowhere. He’s been an outlier for years.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was quick to push back in an interview with Fox News, saying: “I think it’s ridiculous when a United States Senator is calling out an advisor to the President.” That said, it remains to be seen what exactly President Trump and his Administration would consider to be a compromise on immigration, and that problem doesn’t look likely to resolve itself soon. Social wishes Miller would stay away from any negotiations: Over the past 30 days, he has a 22 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz Image: Twitter / @StephenMillerAL
