President Trump has reached the 500-day mark in office, and with his lack of popularity holding steady, political prognosticators have turned to the November midterm elections to predict what the future of Congress might look like. Most administrations see their party suffer losses in the Midterms, but the stakes are especially high for Trump, who could face an especially hostile legislative branch come 2019. The website FiveThirtyEight has been measuring polls regarding the race for Congress, and currently has Democrats at 45.8 percent on the generic ballot, compared with 40.3 percent for Republicans. That gap is smaller than it was in December 2017, when Democrats were up to 50.1 percent and their opponents were down to 37.3 percent. But even a five-point advantage for Dems could be enough to take back the House, albeit narrowly. The Senate is much more of a crapshoot since Democrats are defending seats in red states like West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, and North Dakota. Social’s preferred party is clear: Over the past 90 days, “Democrats + Midterms” has a 59 percent positive score, while “GOP + Midterms” is at 39 percent positive. –Alex Shultz
