What may be the most audacious bid for a seat in the U.S. Senate is taking place in West Virginia. Don Blankenship, former CEO of Massey Energy, was convicted in 2015 for his role in the Upper Big Branch Mine explosion in 2010, which left 29 miners dead. He was sent to prison in 2016 and released almost a year ago. Now, Blankenship is raising eyebrows across the nation for his decision to run in the 2018 election. Ironically, Blankenship is using his candidacy to promote better mine safety standards, releasing a statement on Apr. 4 calling for bureaucratic changes to the Mine Safety and Health Administration and improved technology in mines. Many across social media find his candidacy unbelievable, giving Blankenship 78 percent negative opinions and calling him a criminal. –Hugo Guzman
