As has become the norm whenever President Trump successfully reads off a teleprompter for a sustained period of time, he’s riding a wave of better-than-usual sentiment on Twitter after Tuesday’s State of the Union Address. The speech was a long one, clocking in at over an hour. POTUS touted what he considers “the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history,” while also touching on the strength of the job market under his Administration. He attempted to strike a conciliatory tone, especially as he discussed an expensive infrastructure plan that would require Democratic votes. But that bipartisan approach fell off the wagon when Trump got to immigration and the so-called Dreamers. “My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans because Americans are dreamers, too,” he said. Trump’s address got strong support from the usual suspects like former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who tweeted: “Absolutely incredible in every way. That speech will be remembered and thought of as historically great. POTUS crushed it tonight!” And in general, it was positively received: “#SOTU” garnered a 52 percent positive score on Twitter over the past day, which given Trump’s usual low numbers, is a pretty strong showing. But in a broader context, this State of the Union is unlikely to move the needle for the President. CNN reported that 70 percent of respondents to its poll said they either had a very positive or somewhat positive reaction to Trump’s address. That’s the lowest net rating for any President since CNN began polling responses to SOTU in 1998. –Alex Shultz
