With more than 8 million tons of it in the ocean, plastic is considered the top bane of the oceanic ecosystem. Microplastics are generally considered the most harmful by experts because of how they sneak into marine diets, but one plastic product has been getting all the attention recently. Plastic straws became the target of environmentalist ire after a viral video showed a sea turtle with one stuck up its nose enduring pain as rescuers tried to remove it. Now cities such as Seattle and Miami Beach are passing total bans on plastic straws, and the UK may follow suit next year. Social media users are generally supportive of such efforts, giving plastic straws 79 percent negatives. Some companies have started to take note of the shift in public opinion, offering alternatives like reusable silicone, glass, or metal straws. A few are going even further, making reusable straws from materials like paper and bamboo for maximum environmental friendliness. However, the final frontier may be edible straws, such as those created from seaweed by Loliware. The straws are made to look and feel like plastic but can be munched away once the drink is gone. –Hugo Guzman
