Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Oliver North, known for his role in the 1980s’ Iran-Contra scandal, in which arms were funneled to Tehran (then under an embargo) to fund counter-revolutionary forces in Nicaragua, is back in the arms business. The National Rifle Assn. has picked him to replace longtime president Pete Brownell, though if improving online opinions on the embattled org was the plan, North may have been the wrong choice. North is being called a "criminal" – among other things -- on social media, pulling 62 percent negatives after the announcement. The shadow of Iran-Contra still stalks North, it seems. Several prominent Nicaraguan counter-revolutionaries were later accused of human rights violations by Human Rights Watch, and North was himself convicted of arms dealing. The NRA’s CEO, Wayne LaPierre, sees things differently, however. "Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator, and skilled leader," LaPierre said in a statement. "In these times, I can think of no one better suited to serve as our President." LaPierre might also see something of a social media kindred spirit in North. Both men are disliked online, with LaPierre getting 67 percent negatives. –Hugo Guzman
