Anyone who has ever tried to eat chips in a public setting, like mass transit or an office cubicle, knows that the satisfying crunch of so many snacks can quickly become an annoyance. Noisy bags round out the reasons such noshing isn’t always the best choice in public or the workplace. According to Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo, women are especially concerned about becoming snack spectacles. “They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public,” Nooyi told Freakonomics Radio on Jan. 31. “And they don’t lick their fingers generously, and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth.” Nooyi went on to say that PepsiCo is working on Doritos for women, but now the company says that is not the case. In a statement on Tuesday, the company said: "We already have Doritos for women -- they’re called Doritos, and they’re loved by millions." Still, the online reception for “Lady Doritos,” while not noisy, suggests there might be a market after all. The idea pulls 52 percent positive sentiments, with many ridiculing it, but slightly more seriously considering it. –Hugo Guzman
