While Valentine’s Day is still an enormously popular if slightly cheesy, lovey-dovey holiday, it’s now preceded by an increasingly popular celebration with a similar name: “Galentine’s Day.” This one, dedicated to friendship, seems to be for ladies only, and it takes place on Feb. 13, a mere 24 hours before couples spend billions on flowers, chocolates, and expensive dinners. It was established by none other than Leslie Knope, the fictional character played by Amy Poehler in Parks and Recreation. The 2010 episode aptly named “Galentine’s Day” from the second season of the hit show features Knope as she hosts a group of her female friends. By 2014, when Parks and Recreation was in its sixth season and throwing out another “Galentine’s Day” episode, the idea had already moved from TV to the real world. And now it’s “a thing,” complete with countless articles and listicles of the best gifts for women to give to the women friends in their lives. “Galentine’s Day” has a 95 percent positive score over the past seven days, indicating it’s not going anywhere in years to come. No “Broentine’s Day” on the horizon, thankfully. –Alex Shultz
