Whoever emerges victorious in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final will be taking home their city’s first-ever NHL championship. For the Washington Capitals, that would be 44 years in the making. For the Vegas Golden Knights, which won Game One on Monday, it would be one whole season of waiting. The Golden Knights are among the strangest success stories in sports history, advancing to the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season with relative ease while featuring a roster of castoffs. The NHL’s most recent expansion franchise breezed through the regular season with a 51-24-7 record, which was tops in the Pacific Division and more than sufficient to earn home-ice advantage for this title bout. The Washington Capitals, meanwhile, have routinely been knocked out early in the postseason in recent years despite boasting one of the more talented rosters in the league. But finally, in the 13th year of the Alexander Ovechkin era, the Caps defeated their arch-rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in a seven-game East Finals matchup. At this point, Twitter is rooting for Washington to end its long drought more than it is cheering for Vegas to take the championship in Year One. Over the past three days, the Twitter handle @Capitals has an 84 percent positive score, while @GoldenKnights has 80 percent positives. –Alex Shultz
