For years on financial lists and in the public imagination, Bill Gates has usually as the world’s richest man, but Bloomberg revealed earlier this week that the Microsoft CEO has been unseated by another tech titan. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, is worth $100 billion vs. Gates’s $91.7 billion. Second-place Warren Buffett was also pushed down by Bezos’ meteoric rise, but there’s one place where Gates and Buffett both beat Bezos soundly, and that’s on Social. Buffett and Gates rank at 71 percent and 60 percent positive, respectively, thanks to their longtime philanthropic work. Buffett and Gates, together with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, started The Giving Pledge, whereby billionaires agree to give away half their wealth. But Bezos is the only one among America’s top five billionaires not to have signed that pledge. In fact, his philanthropic works pale in comparison, and even the Bezos Family Foundation, which funds education around the country, is the work of his parents. Bezos is no Scrooge, but Social certainly treats him like one, giving him the lowest 30dB sentiment ranking of the three at 58 percent positive. But perhaps he is not getting enough credit for pouring millions into The Washington Post, and reviving the newspaper now being celebrated in the movie The Post for its courageous commitment to transparent democracy. –Hugo Guzman
