The first season of The Handmaid’s Tale was nothing short of a smashing success. The dystopian drama series won eight Emmy awards, and actress Elisabeth Moss received a bundle of accolades for her role as June Osborne. So it’s no surprise that Season Two—which premiered with two episodes on Hulu last week—is also getting high marks from critics, with a 96 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. But Social, while still heavily invested in the country of Gilead, is struggling to keep up with the show’s harrowing themes. The Verge summed up that feeling in a recent piece entitled, “Is ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ still worth the agony of watching it?” Along those lines, Sophie Gilbert at The Atlantic writes, “The most compelling scenes in the new season are the ones that explore how exactly Gilead took over America and that draw on contemporary events and figures with eerie relevance.” Perhaps that contributes to Social’s uneasiness with Season Two. Over the past three days, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has a 48 percent positive score on Social, with words driving the vibe like “menacing,” “fear,” “frustration,” and “heartbreaking.” –Alex Shultz
