Steven Spielberg is back to directing sci-fi action flicks with the newly released Ready Player One, which made its debut on Mar. 29. Based on the 2011 novel of the same name, Ready Player One is set in the year 2045. The real world is falling apart and a virtual-reality, videogame alternative called OASIS is offering an escape from it all. Tye Sheridan plays 18-year-old Wade, also known by his avatar Parzival, who ends up on a quest to retrieve an Easter egg hidden by OASIS’s creator that gives its finder complete control of the VR program. Olivia Cooke stars alongside Sheridan as Samantha/Art3mis, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, and T.J. Miller also play important roles. Ready Player One was immensely popular in book form, but in light of #Gamergate and the amount of vitriol/harassment from a generally straight, white-male audience that it produced, some critics are decidedly not in the mood for a movie about gamer culture. Ready Player One did have a big weekend at the box office though, earning more than $41 million domestically. The film is rife with pop culture references from the 1980s and beyond, and NPR’s Bob Mondello writes, “The plot's not going to tax anyone over the age of 12, but Spielberg crams the screen with visuals eye-popping enough to make viewers not care.” Rotten Tomatoes and Social are on the same page with their opinion of this one: It earns a 76 percent fresh score among critics plus a 79 percent audience score on the film review aggregation site, and over the past three days, “Ready Player One” sits at 77 percent positive on Social. –Alex Shultz
