After years of waiting, the latest installment of the Ocean’s franchise has dropped. Ocean’s 8 features an all-female group of thieves whose ringleader is Debbie Ocean (played by Sandra Bullock), the sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney in the older films). Debbie gets out of prison and promptly makes plans to steal a wildly expensive necklace at the Met Gala. She’s joined by a cast of characters with unique skill sets, played by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter. Anne Hathaway also assumes the role of Daphne Kluger, the owner of the expensive necklace. She and a few other actresses in the film have been singled out for their strong performances, but the plot has left many feeling meh about the latest installment. As The New Yorker’s Richard Brody writes in his review, “Ocean's 8 isn't bad—it's simply not up to the talents of its cast.” On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 68 percent critics score and a 54 percent audience score. Social is coming in a few points higher, assigning Ocean’s 8 a 66 percent positive score over the past three days. There’s potential trouble on the horizon, though. The volume of discussion about the stars of Ocean’s 8 is almost zilch, as are references to the movie’s Twitter handle. That could point to a steep drop-off in viewer interest in the weeks to come. For now, Ocean’s 8 is killing it at the box office, easily finishing first over the weekend after bringing in $41.5 million domestically. –Alex Shultz
