On June 19, Netflix released Nanette, a one-hour standup by Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby. It was Gadsby’s first—and very possibly last—Netflix appearance, but she certainly made it count. Social has been raving about Gadsby’s performance, which splits from the norms of traditional standup in favor of something more lasting. At the start, Gadsby discusses her experience growing up in conservative Tasmania, which was particularly difficult as a lesbian. But Gadsby spends a large chunk of time devoted to talking about the comedy scene in general and how there are double standards and unfair treatment applied to anyone who is not a white man. “People feel safer when men do the angry comedy,” she says at one point. “They’re the kings of the genre. When I do it, I’m just a miserable lesbian ruining all the fun and the banter. When men do it, ‘heroes of free speech!’” Gadsby actually announces in the Netflix special that she intends to quit comedy—something she reconfirmed to Variety recently, with the caveat that “everyone’s allowed to change their mind.” Social hopes she reconsiders. Over the past 14 days, “Nanette” has an 81 percent positive score on Social, with sentiments driving the Vibe on 30dB such as “thank you,” “powerful,” “stunning,” and “brilliant.” –Alex Shultz Image: Twitter / @hannahgadsby
