Meryl Streep is one of the most accomplished and acclaimed actresses in the history of cinema and is generally considered to be a beloved figure in Hollywood circles. But her involvement—or lack thereof—in the #MeToo movement has her taking a dip in popularity on Social. Last weekend, actor and activist Rose McGowan tweeted a now-deleted message directed at Streep and others who she believes turned a blind eye as Harvey Weinstein committed countless acts of sexual misconduct, writing, “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance [she may have meant “change”]. I despise your hypocrisy.” In response, Streep released a statement to HuffPo and said that she had met Weinstein only once and that “he needed me much more than I needed him and he made sure I didn’t know” about his heinous acts. Although her remarks were fairly thorough, she wasn’t aided by the release of posters around Los Angeles with the words “she knew” plastered across her face. Those posters were apparently the work of a right-wing “artist” named Sabo, who said he put them up because Streep took swipes at President Trump. Over the last three days, Meryl Streep has a 23 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
