In November 2016, Kanye West cancelled the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour and withdrew from the public eye to address pressing mental health concerns. He’s kept a low profile until this month when he reemerged on Twitter with a mix of controversial takes and potentially huge news about upcoming projects. First, the good: Kanye says he has a new seven-song album coming out on June 1, and he claims he’ll be releasing a separate joint album with Kid Cudi a week later. He’s also supposedly producing albums for Pusha T, Teyana Taylor, and Nas, which is a welcome development for hip-hop fans. West has interspersed those announcements with a few harmless and charming tweets offering self-help advice and observations like “I’m nice at ping pong.” But then there’s the curious: Kanye endorsed Candace Owens, a far-right media personality and has offered his support for Donald Trump and other “free thinkers.” He retweeted a bunch of videos from Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert cartoon who, as Mashable points out, once wrote "women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently." West tweeted on Wednesday that his wife, Kim Kardashian, "wanted me to make this clear to everyone. I don't agree with everything Trump does. I don't agree 100% with anyone but myself.” That hasn’t stopped alt-right figures like Alex Jones from heaping praise on West. On the flip side, the Chicago Tribune says : “The list of prominent black artists who unfollowed West on Twitter so far include Drake, Jaden Smith, Janelle Monae, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and The Weeknd.” Still, West isn’t taking as much heat on Social as you might expect: Over the past 30 days, Kanye has a 63 percent positive score, and the Twitter handle @KanyeWest is all the way up at 73 percent positive. –Alex Shultz
