Jesus Christ Superstar was resurrected this Easter, and the Twittersphere came away impressed with what it saw. The latest version of the 1970 rock opera tacked on Live in Concert to its title for a 2-hour, 20-minute performance from the Marcy Avenue Armory in Brooklyn that was broadcast on NBC. The musical, which centers on the last days of Christ, starred John Legend as Jesus and featured the explosive Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas, silver-throated Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, and a campy, crowd-pleasing Alice Cooper as King Herod. The New York Times generally enjoyed Legend’s rendition, writing, “Mr. Legend delivered where it counted, putting his rich, soulful voice to work in seamless performances of well-loved songs,” but he was so-so when it came to acting. The same review added that Legend’s reactions came “with a broad facial expression best described as, ‘John Legend is worried.’” That wasn’t enough to detract from the all-around show, though. The Hollywood Reporter says 9.4 million people tuned in to watch, which was bigger audience than American Idol garnered on Sunday night. Rotten Tomatoes critics assigned Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert a 100 percent fresh score and an 88 percent audience score. The latter is exactly in line with Twitter, which also gives @JCSTheMusical a sky-high 88 percent positive over the past day. –Alex Shultz
