Last weekend an online publication called Babe released a detailed story told from the perspective of a woman in her early 20s who went on a date and later had an aggressive sexual encounter with actor Aziz Ansari of Parks and Recreation fame. She accused him of sexual assault, and Twitter has been arguing about the piece ever since. Some of the criticism comes from the journalistic standards applied to the story -- it was heavily marketed by Babe in a way that struck some as an inappropriate attempt to get views/clicks off a serious topic. It also delves into potentially unnecessary details about the woman’s outfit selection and how Ansari didn’t offer her a choice of wines, which Jezebel’s Julianne Escobedo Shepherd says “left the subject open to further attacks, the kind that are entirely, exhaustingly predictable.” To Shepherd’s point, essays in The Atlantic and elsewhere criticized the accuser rather than Ansari, saying the woman should have removed herself from the sexual encounter if she was uncomfortable. But those opinions conveniently ignore other factors involved -- that Ansari was significantly older than his date and in a position of power as a famous celebrity; that he reportedly told the woman multiple times that it was O.K. to slow down, only to immediately and sometimes forcefully initiate another sexual move; and that the piece identified a common and unpleasant experience countless women have found relatable. Ansari didn’t deny the encounter took place, and like other celebs credibly accused of sexual misconduct, he's seen a major dip in support. Over the last four days, @AzizAnsari is pulling 25 percent positives from men, while women come in at 23 percent positive. –Alex Shultz
