Despite repeated efforts to pull the plug on the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare has proven surprisingly resilient. GOP lawmakers introduced bills in both the House and the Senate to repeal the ACA on Mar. 24, 2010, the day after President Barack Obama signed the health care overhaul into law. Subsequent efforts at repeal of Obamacare have not been popular online, and a new attempt by Republicans is pulling 72 percent negative opinions. On Thursday, the Justice Dept. filed a brief with a U.S. District Court in Texas supporting a lawsuit by a group of states led by Texas arguing that Obamacare's individual mandate is unconstitutional. The individual mandate requires all tax-paying Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty. That guaranteed protections for people with pre-existing conditions since they could not be denied health insurance if the government requires purchase. When Obamacare was first designed, the Supreme Court ruled that tax penalties were the only way Congress could enact an individual mandate. However, Congress repealed that tax penalty in 2017. No tax penalty means no individual mandate, the Texas lawsuit argues. –Hugo Guzman
