A new Florida law that addresses some of the concerns of state residents in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting is getting solid numbers on Social. The bill was signed on Friday by Republican Governor Rick Scott, and it does all of the following: Raises the age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21, bans bump stocks, requires a three-day waiting period to purchase firearms, gives law enforcement more leeway to take guns from individuals they feel are potentially violent, and allows for school staffers to be armed. The last provision was easily the most controversial and led to the bill barely passing the state Senate, 20-18 (the no votes mostly came from Democrats). The measures have drawn bipartisan praise, though more stringent suggestions like banning assault rifles failed to advance past the legislature. And this moderate approach still didn’t satisfy the NRA, which immediately sued the state of Florida and asked a judge to stop the age restriction from going into effect. The NRA is in the minority, though. Over the last three days, “Florida + Gun Control” has a 59 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
