President Trump is riling up his base again ahead of the midterms by floating the idea of an executive order ditching birthright citizenship here in the US. Specifically, POTUS wants to end birthright citizenship for babies born in the United States to noncitizen parents. The President floated the idea in an interview with Axios.
The President also expressed his multi Pinocchio belief that no other country has birthright citizenship when in fact over 30 countries, including our neighbors to the north and south, share the US’ support of the right.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution is clear on the subject and states “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” It’s unclear where Mr. Trump believes he has the power to override the Constitution with an executive order but Speaker Paul Ryan is having none of it and strongly rebuked the President’s plan. Social media is of a similar mind coming in at a paltry 16 percent positive for the President’s latest trial balloon.
